How to Become a Firefighter in Georgia

Introduction

Firefighters are real heroes in our midst. They risk their lives to put out fires and keep us safe. Firefighters work long shifts to rescue people and animals. Firefighters need to be in tip top shape because they are constantly running in and out of danger. Additionally, they often have to carry heavy loads and their equipment and uniforms are also heavy. Firefighter education in Georgia includes real job training and classroom courses.

Instructions

Step 1

Get your high school diploma or GED. Make sure you are over the age of 18.

Step 2

Pass a medical examination, a physical agility test, and an investigation of your character by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council. Proof of morality and physical ability is necessary before you can begin any training.

Step 3

Attend the Georgia Fire Academy’s Basic Firefighter NPQ program. The program will be split into 3 modules. Your instructors will be from local fire departments.

Step 4

Make an appointment to take the certification exam through the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council. Bring a photo ID to the test.

Step 5

Study well for your test. You can attend a preparation program in your area or at the Georgia Fire Academy in the city of Forsyth. Take and pass the test.

Warning

You cannot have any felony convictions within 10 years of the day you get certified.
