How to Start a New Cooking Business Out of My Home

Introduction

If you love to cook and company is always raving about your food, it may be time to start your own cooking business at home. At home cooking businesses do not require a lot of capital to begin. To succeed, you will need an original idea to set your business apart from all the other food facilities in your area. If you do decide to start an at home cooking business, be prepared to work hard but have a great time doing it.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

- Real estate license

Instructions

Step 1

Decide what will make your food unique. Are you going to specialize in food from a certain culture or area in the world? Are you going to take special requests and cook whatever your customer asks for? Maybe you will make your restaurant great for health-conscious folk. Develop a food concept that will set you apart from the competition.

Will your customers need to pick up their orders or will they be delivered?

Step 2

Understand your market. Know what kind of neighborhood you live in. Do you reside in a wealthy community? Is everyone from a similar religious or ethnic background? Do you live in a college town where many of your customers will be students? Knowing your market will help you create a menu, a marketing plan, and prices.

Step 3

Find out what health codes you will need to abide by. Apply for any local and state licenses necessary to open a cooking business in your home.

Step 4

Tell all of your friends about your new business. Offer them discounts for buying from you. Tell them to pass on the news of your business to everyone in town.

Step 5

Cook a bunch of dishes. Sit outside your home and offer free samples to passersby. Give out menus with your contact information to all of the tasters.

Tip

If you can, offer a delivery service to customers.

Warning

Don’t forget to wash your hands before you cook and handle food.
