metal pipe patch

How to Patch Leaking Metal Water Pipes

Introduction

Metal pipes are usually reliable but they are susceptible to damage and they can spring leaks. Leaks can come from small holes caused by corrosion or major cracks. You do not need to cut into the pipe to repair it. Patching is a viable repair option and it is a permanent repair. Patch kits do not cost a lot of money, are relatively simple to use, and can be bought at your local hardware store.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

- Sandpaper

- Pipe patch kit

Instructions

Step 1

Locate the leak. Feel along the pipe for running water. Look in areas where there is a puddle on the floor below the pipe.

Step 2

Sand the area of the pipe around the leak. You are trying to make the area rough so use a rough grit sand paper. You want to end up with an area that is an inch out from the leak.

Step 3

Wet the patch. Wrap the patch tightly around the leak in the pipe. Work quickly because the patch bonds quickly once it gets wet.

Step 4

Wind the patch around the pipe in both directions to seal the leak better. Make sure to have a few layers over the leak itself.

Step 5

Press the patch into the pipe to secure it. Let the patch dry completely.

Tip

Wear rubber gloves when working with the patch.

Warning

Be aware that a pipe that leaks in one place is likely to develop more leaks and it may be a better idea to replace the pipe rather than repair it.
