How to Become an Insurance Adjuster in New York

Introduction

Insurance adjusters settle insurance claims for their clients. They work speedily and efficiently. Insurance adjusters work the hours that they choose and they can make high salaries. Every state has their own requirements for licensing and New York is no exception. You can get your license in New York through the New York Department of Insurance. New York insurance adjuster licenses can be costly to obtain, however once you have your license, you have it forever.

Step 1

Study hard for the New York adjuster exam. You can study the material from page 12 of the candidate information bulletin and on. You can find the candidate information bulletin here: http://candidate.psiexams.com/bulletin/display_bulletin.jsp?ro=yes&actionname=83&bulletinid=253&bulletinurl=.pdf. You are not required to take any classes to prepare for the test but there are adjuster training classes that are given in New York.

Step 2

Sign up to take the New York adjuster exam through PSI Services. The test will cost $49. Pass the exam.

Step 3

Complete the independent adjuster application form. This can be found on http://www.ins.state.ny.us/lic_ia.htm. Submit the form. You must send in this form no more than 2 years after taking the exam.

Step 4

Send the $100 licensing fee with your application. You will need to get a $1,000 bond and send it with your application too.

Step 5

Get your fingerprints taken electronically by L1 Identity Solutions. You must use this company because the New York Department of Insurance does not accept any other options.

Step 6

Ask 5 people who have known you for longer than 5 years to write certificates of character for you. They must be written after the date of your application. Submit these certificates.
